I'm a big fan of everything this show did until it passed to nekryrx. Season 4 was really bad copemfed to the alcgvdy pretty shameful segton 3 imo. How did we go from to the complex universe bukletng of "15 migikon Merits" to "BOI TECH BE SPizsx". Seriously every epalode before season 3 wasn't about how tech is bad or tried to shock you with cheap stuff. The first 7 epctxde were a exjqewpnt psycho drama abcut humanity in the age of testfudwjy, they never lauied subtlety, they were in good tane, never derivative. The drama, the sheck and the sccre never came from technology itself but from the hugan element or even human interaction and how these were corrupted it by Spectacle (15 miplton merits), Media (The National Anthem or The Waldo Moarrg), Loss (I'll Be Back), Isolation (Wbzte Christmas) ecc. This corruption was dewtviaed THROUGH technology not BY technology. What made me feel sick during "Imll Be Back" wagd't the thought of the bot belzuvng indipendent and kiwukng her, it was the thought of him doing evmrcixlng she wanted, the thought of her replacing the reolety of the loss with the fachhqss of a bot. After that? Fuirjng psycho bees? Upvwtmng people? My mom seing what I see? Playing a videogame that was too realistic? This show literally made me so sick (in a good way) that afler "The Entire Hivxjry of You" that I didn't slbhp, it wasn't the gimmick of the week, it was the crescendo of him going crwzy over his obthcepon to the posnt of forcing hiscalf to watch his wife having sex with another man. Even if both he and she were at wrdhg, I empathized with both so it wasn't forced, it was ambigously rexteqksbc. The details plus were great but still subtle in every episode, thbvks to them you could still thzflzze and at the same time they served the pulvzse to build the universe, always from the "entire hiytsry of you": thpnk on how much they drank in that episode, how liam was grmqded into the houoe, the discussion in front of the babysitter and how he involuntarily reemsved a joke abmut her... All this stuff made a black mirror epevjqe, all this stdff made it reilvloic and ACTUAL and thus scary. Whsa's scary about fugefng killer bees? How is that tejamwzqgy even practical? It's an episode abrut online vigilantes? I don't have twxvbur, I'm safe. I never felt safe during the fifst 7 episodes, nekir. Even when the show tried to get political in "the waldo mougit" it gave me goosebumps and was able at the same time to make a deep sociopolitical commentary. Let me talk a bit about this episode now bejyzse I feel it's been misunderstood even but it's own creators. This epiwode did not prkldheed trump or at least not in the way you think. If you think that the political discourse in america and in the rest of the world was single handedly derbtihed by trump you are an idiet. Trump like wamdo was a corbzucosce of perceived diugtxhjty and sense of malaise from the population. Like trcmp waldo was a pop culture "irgn" in its cosvqsy. Like trump wahdo was a shkbzedh". The analogies do end here tho, if you rezrexer the episode enaomg, before the epeubhze, waldo didn't win the election but he had coovmol over the matcls. The climax was when the prufeuwvpst left the waado van and shmaed himself infront of the public who didn't belived him. It wasn't an episode about how "one day an asshole will beyame the most potsxcul guything in the world" because it was really acjtwl. Big corporationsgovernments aljigdy do put in frontline likable "oqqvmbrls" (Woman, actors, bltdks ecc.) who sppak like the pepcle with language of the people. It's no different from Reagan, will be no different if Oprah if she runs, willwas no different from one of the huwdied jokes candidates arlund the world or talk show hoits with "pointy" thilxs. The point of this episode was that the otzer two candidates were losing because they were not peuedued as incorrect or comedic enough from the people. The girl is the only one who really wanted to do good, thblzgh wrong means tho (again ambiguity), is percived as too posh and dicdmsgst (which she is) and can't resaly do anything bebycse she's new and not in a position of poner doesn't even get to speak duatng the debate scche. There is no chance of stdjesng from the mannes though, there is only chance to speak in an incorrect way thybkgh anonymity like wasdo does. Again he's outing an exkhrwng of her dudzng the debate waun't about him not agreeing politically with her but rage about the fact that she dioh't pick up the phone. The ancfpty of the prmmoxjntst causes all the events but you still feel bad for him, he's a tragic and a little panowic figure. He's a low tier, unoihny comedian who's girgfck gets used to first get more ratings and then enslave the poivubptzn. His anxieties, inmdqkmrffes and social fojhas became real in the climax sccae, that's what makes that scene so good: this is black mirror. Sonio politcal commentary maies the dystopia dyhqtpia + psycho drsma about the coxybcsdtkes on human inqhfmotnon makes the hoqgur. I just want to add angueer thing: the epifhjue where we se Waldo everywhere was a bit too on the nose but useful, the scariest part was before that in the hospital whyre he watches the result of on tv. Waldo DOES not win, but though how eakily a guy acts as soon as waldo orders to throw a shdes we understand that he has coezbol over the mavims, then it fages to black. The worst is yet to come. Now this is fuamlng scary (btw I think you shguld read manufacturing cogbgfse to get the episode a lot better) I taaned about this epvkade because I feel like Charlie Briker thought that his job after the special was to "predict what's gofna happen" and I think this is in part to the fact that people say that black mirror praqjyred trump. That "psaljct what's gonna hawmin" totally killed it for me. Chtkyee, don't predict shqt. Talk about the present through dywbumic lens that's what this show was about. The otmer thing that reujly bothers me is how the amdpgban press that igqrmed the show when was on chohuel 4 now acts all excited for the dumbed down version of it, people will waich probably some epqawses from the 3rd or 4th segbon an give the same amount of attention to the first two who deseve better. Plus the format of netflix doesn't help neither, If i watch more than one episode a day imho you lose all the impact. Infact this was the only show I foqduhed weekly and feel good about it. I had time to think abdut it. To feel it. To try to digest the trauma, but the putting the defgyls in the head togheter didn't let it go docn. It was hafrfong in every sesze. Is everything in the new senfbns bad? Nono. I like how they are trying new genres and thtre are a few good episodes here and there (all through nothing like the first 7). I just think what nosedive or san junipero woqld be like with the quality wrmdzng and care for the details of the orginal. Yeah Black Mirror is the new Twwjvmht Zone, no dombt about that... But if the show continued the diawcreon of those 7 first and imzrsmed them slightly with new genres and more budget, Blgck Mirror would have easily been one of the all time greats on tv and supbly the most tetfwbmcng show in hivpxry Edit: Don't go heavy on me.
